modern / trad. - New dance tunes

Tradition is the passing of the fire and not the worship of ashes. (Gustav Mahler)

After the 'Schnurrpfeiffereyen" and "Ein gutter nerrisch Tantz" by Martina Sirtl with the series "modern / trad" - we have now produced new dance tunes, a new, groundbreaking series for the folk dance scene.

Scottish, waltzes, mazurkas, polkas are just a few of the most popular couple dances, which are common in many parts of Europe and are the reason why we published this new set of tunes.

Only through constant change and renewal can a dance (or Balfolk) remain as good as before. Dance music has evolved not only in France, Ireland and Scandinavia during the folk revival in recent decades. For some years now in the German-speaking countries as well a colorful music and dance scene has emerged inspired by the traditional music of our neighboring countries and equally well-rooted in its own musical past.

In modern / trad., looking over the edge of our plates, we gathered newly composed dance pieces from the best traditions, which are thus, in the best sense, the "new German folk dance music"!

And dance music is for the legs, not the head, and should be lightweight, yet not sound silly. In the selection of melodies therefore particular emphasis was placed on playability and the fun of making music together!!

Volume 2 Waltzes and Polkas

From many submissions, Johannes Mayr and Christoph Pelgen have compiled a second volume. Again, there are beautiful, intoxicating (and again only newly composed) waltzes and polkas. These melodies - about 47 Waltzes & Polkas 28 - were composed by well-known and respected musicians from the folk dancing scene.

A sound sample from the CD

The dances are suitable for modern musical instruments, and of course once again playable by most drone instruments like bagpipes or the hurdy gurdy (tuned to G/C).

With the book is an excellent companion CD, recorded by the Duo Cassard who perform on all the tunes.

Further volumes are being planned:

modern / trad. Band 3 / Cercles und Bourrées - currently a work-in-progress!

The two editors, Johannes Mayr and Christoph Pelgen, having now ushered in the second round, look forward to the third volume as they seek out beautiful, intoxicating (and again only newly composed) Cercle and Bourrées.
